Is sugar dangerous for your health?

Is sugar dangerous for your health?

Most people in the western world are used to consume foods that are rich in refined sugar as for instance chocolate, cookies, cakes and sweet stuff like that.  In comparison to the late 19th century, the consumption of sugar has dramatically increased in the US:  from 5 lbs per person at the end of the 19th century to 150 lbs per year ! And, what's even worse, most people don't even know that many foods contain hidden sugar, so for instance ketchup or many fruit juices or packaged foods you can buy at your local supermarket. In all these products sugar is used as additive or as glucose, sucrose, fructose, dextrose or maltose.

Sugar is absolutely unnecessary for human nutrition because it has no real nutritional value. On the contrary, it's really dangerous for your health because it makes your body acidic, causes severe health issues and - probably the most important thing for you as you want to lose weight - makes you gain weight because you'll have really bad sugar cravings all the time.

The bad influence of sugar on your health

So let's examine what sugar (especially refined sugar) is doing to your body. As I mentioned above, eating foods rich in sugar compromises the sensitive pH-balance.  As a consequence, you run the risk of getting cancer, arthritis, obesity, hormonal disruptions, osteoporosis, diabetes, cataracts and other degenerative diseases. This is where most doctors would agree. After the intake of sugar your immune system is no longer able to do its really important job for about four to six hours: to fight harmful bacteria and viruses.

And, another argument against sugar: More than sixty chemicals are needed to turn the beige sugar can into white (bleached) sugar! (I honestly admit I also wasn't aware of this.) Many chemicals are still inside the tiny sugar cubes when you're getting them at the supermarket. In addition to that,  all natural vitamins and minerals are chemically removed, for example chromium. This is really bad because a lack of chromium in your body leads to instability of your blood sugar level.

Tipps how to control nasty sugar cravings

If sugar is missing in your daily nutrition or raw food diet, take natural sweeteners as for instance agave, maple sirup or honey instead (have you already tried out herbal teas with honey? :-)  )  Or replace refined sugar by Stevia or Xylitol. If you're a Type-II diabetes, taking agave as a sweetener will be the best solution because it's lower glycemic.

And, if sugar (or chocolate) cravings are getting too strong:

  • drink a big glass of water (most cravings have other reasons than hunger!)
  • eat lower glycemic fruits like pears, bananas, apples and berries. Tropical fruits taste well but don't eat too many of them since they're high in sugar!
  • eat schizandra berries or supplement with schizandra
  • take a chromium supplement to restore a healthy blood sugar level
  • alkalize your body by eating lots of veggies, fruits, salads and drink green juices or green smoothies
  • cleanse your body through lemon water to get rid of detrimental sugar and acidic compounds

And, if you REALLY can't go on living without chocolate (believe me, I know what I'm talking about...), take a bar of dark chocolate instead.
